I finally did it! I finished The Hobbit! I am so proud of myself for finally finishing this book!

photo_5653_0-8I started reading The Hobbit a few years ago and got a few chapters in before I gave up and abandoned it to my bookshelf to collect dust. I decided on a whim to pick it back up and give it another chance, and I’m very glad I did!

I really enjoyed this story and I can completely understand why J.R.R Tolkien is such a beloved writer. I loved how everything he included in the plot was really well thought out and became more important later on. I fell in love with Bilbo Baggins, his character was so charming and I loved his development from a humble hobbit at the beginning to a hero by the end.

The world was truly fascinating. Having never read or watched Lord of the Rings I had no clue what to expect of this world before going into The Hobbit. Tolkien’s descriptions were so detailed and there were so many quirky little aspects of the world which were really fun to read.

That being said, the middle part of this book really dragged for me. Things were happening in the plot but at the same time I felt like nothing was happening. The descriptions were so long and detailed that at times it felt like a chore to read them. I think I’m more used to reading books with more dialogue and shorter descriptions which is probably why I had trouble staying focussed. And when I put the book down, I didn’t feel the urge to pick it back up and carry on reading, like I usually do with a book that I’m loving. However, the story did pick up again for me more towards the end and I really loved the last few chapters.

Overall, I’m really glad that I read The Hobbit. I really loved the world and the characters. There were parts that dragged and bored me a little but the ending was definitely worth it for me.

  1. I bought this one, but haven’t read it yet. I was originally planning to use this for a reading challenge as a book involving travel, but ended up using The Night Circus [Erin Morgenstern] for that one. So, of course, The Hobbit is still on my TBR-shelf, haha. One day, though!

    Nice review ^-^
